Hearth Maintenance Tips

How do I light my pilot?
Click here for step by step instructions to light your pilot.

The glass fogs up every time I use my gas appliance. Is this normal?
Yes, water vapor is one the by-products of combustion, and each time you use your gas appliance, you may see condensation of the glass. It will clear off after a few minutes.

How do I clean the glass on my hearth appliance?

Consult your owner's manual on how to remove the glass from your particular model. Please allow your appliance to completely cool before cleaning the glass.  For gas and pellet appliances, simple household glass cleaners that do NOT contain ammonia will work in most cases. (Ammonia based cleaners can cause a milky white haze to be baked on to the glass).  For wood burning appliances, you may be able to use newspaper (yes, it sounds funny).  Get a small amount of newpaper damp and dip it in the fine ash of the firebox.  The ash works as a mild abrasive as you scrub off the smoke residue.  If you have more difficult discoloration of the glass, stop by our store for cleaning products designed especially for this purpose. If your glass is extremely discolored, it may be necessary to replace it. Click here to contact our service department for an annual maintenance and cleaning or call 733-2624.

Why is there film on the inside of the glass in my gas appliance?
This is a normal, resulting from the curing process of the paint and logs. All glass should be cleaned after the first 4 to 6 hours of initial burning to remove deposits before they become baked on through further use. Use any non-ammonia glass cleaner to complete the task.

How often should I clean the firepot on my pellet appliance?
It is best to pull the EZ Clean handle of your firepot at least once a day.  If you are burning corn, hard-wood pellets, or your fuel has higher ash content, you may need to clean your firepot more than once a day.

Can I paint my fireplace or stove to change the color or touch it up?

You need to consult our service technician on this issue. There are a few special paints made specifically for this purpose. Using the wrong paint can cause discoloration and odors. Click here to contact our service department for a tune up and cleaning or call 733-2624.

How often should I have my woodburning chimney cleaned?
Depends on your usage and type of wood. As a rule, every woodburning system should be inspected by a professional at the beginning of each burn season. High usage systems may need to be cleaned twice a season. Click here to contact our service department for an annual maintenance and cleaning or call 733-2624.

Can I adjust the flame on my gas appliance?

Open the control panel of your appliance and locate your main gas valve. If the valve has silver dial marked "High-Low", rotating the dial will adjust your flame height. If your main valve does not have the adjustment dial, it may be due to the type of remote control that's installed on your appliance.  Contact us to see if flame adjustment is an option that can be added to your particular model.
